Airway & Growth Guidance

Healthy Breathing. Healthy Growth. Healthy Smiles.

At Bee Happy Pediatric Dentistry, we believe healthy smiles begin with healthy function. A child's breathing, tongue posture, oral function, and jaw development all work together to influence facial growth, sleep quality, feeding, speech, and overall well-being.

By looking beyond the teeth, we can often identify concerns early—while children are still growing—and provide guidance that supports healthy development during the years when it can make the greatest difference.

Many children who breathe through their mouths, snore, sleep restlessly, grind their teeth, or have difficulty with attention may have underlying airway or functional concerns. Rather than waiting until these concerns become more significant, our philosophy emphasizes early evaluation, prevention, and growth guidance whenever appropriate.

Why Healthy Breathing Matters

Breathing through the nose is the body's natural and healthiest way to breathe. The nose filters, warms, and humidifies the air before it reaches the lungs while encouraging healthy tongue posture.

The tongue plays a fundamental role in oral function and craniofacial development. When it rests gently against the roof of the mouth, it provides the natural support that helps guide healthy development of the upper jaw (maxilla), promotes balanced facial growth, and contributes to a healthy airway. Proper tongue posture also supports efficient swallowing, speech, and overall oral function.

When children breathe primarily through their mouths for extended periods, normal muscle function and facial development may be affected. Over time, this may contribute to:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Narrow jaws
  • Crowded teeth
  • A high, narrow palate
  • Poor tongue posture
  • Dry mouth
  • Snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Altered facial growth

Mouth breathing is often a sign that something may be interfering with normal nasal breathing rather than simply being a habit. Common contributing factors include enlarged adenoids or tonsils, allergies, chronic nasal congestion, tongue-tie, oral habits, and underdeveloped jaws.

Our goal is not simply to close the mouth—it is to understand why your child is breathing through their mouth and, whenever appropriate, address the contributing factors.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

Every child grows differently, and not every child needs treatment. However, evaluating growth and function early allows us to identify concerns before they become more significant and to determine whether observation, preventive guidance, or early intervention may be beneficial.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends establishing a dental home by your child's first birthday. As children grow, periodic evaluation of breathing, oral function, and jaw development helps us monitor healthy development and recommend treatment only when it is appropriate for your child.

What We Evaluate

Our comprehensive airway and growth evaluation includes assessment of:

Facial growth and development

Jaw growth and arch development

Breathing patterns

Tongue posture and mobility

Swallowing function

Oral habits

Dental development

Sleep-related signs and symptoms

Every child is unique, and treatment recommendations are individualized based on your child's age, growth pattern, development, and specific needs.

Depending on the findings, recommendations may include myofunctional therapy, MyoMunchee®, Myobrace®, ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) therapy, orthopedic expansion, Bioblock therapy, and collaboration with ENT physicians, sleep specialists, speech-language pathologists, lactation consultants, orthodontists, and other healthcare providers when appropriate.

Our Growth Guidance Services

Myofunctional Therapy

Exercises designed to improve tongue posture, nasal breathing, swallowing patterns, lip seal, and muscle function to support healthy oral and facial development.

MyoMunchee®

A therapeutic oral appliance used to encourage healthy chewing patterns, tongue function, nasal breathing, and muscle development while complementing myofunctional therapy.

Myobrace®

A removable appliance system designed to improve oral habits, encourage healthy muscle function, and guide jaw and dental development during growth.

ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional)

A custom-made appliance that uses gentle, continuous forces to support jaw development, tongue posture, oral function, and balanced craniofacial growth.

Growth Guidance & Orthopedic Expansion

When appropriate, orthopedic expansion can help create space for proper tongue posture, encourage healthy arch development, and support healthy facial growth. Treatment options may include ALF, Bioblock, or other orthopedic appliances based on your child's individual needs.

Our Philosophy

At Bee Happy Pediatric Dentistry, we believe the best treatment begins before problems become more complex.

Our approach focuses on prevention, early identification, and growth guidance. By evaluating breathing, oral function, tongue posture, swallowing, jaw development, and facial growth together, we can better understand the factors influencing your child's oral health and overall development.

Our goal is not simply to straighten teeth. We strive to support healthy breathing, proper oral function, and balanced facial growth during childhood—helping create a strong foundation for lifelong oral health and overall well-being.

Because every child is unique, our recommendations are always individualized. Whenever appropriate, we collaborate with pediatricians, ENT specialists, sleep physicians, speech-language pathologists, lactation consultants, orthodontists, and other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.
