At Bee Happy Pediatric Dentistry, we know parents do everything possible to keep their kids happy and healthy — especially when it comes to their smiles. Brushing and flossing help prevent cavities, but what if your child knocks out a tooth? It’s easy to panic, especially if there’s bleeding or pain. But staying calm and following these 5 quick steps can make all the difference in saving the tooth and protecting your child’s smile:
Step 1: Call Bee Happy Pediatric Dentistry
Call us right away at (857) 855-3733. We offer same-day emergency visits when possible and will walk you through first-aid steps over the phone.
Step 2: Find the Tooth
Whether it’s a baby or permanent tooth, try to find it. If it’s permanent, handle it by the top (the crown) — not the root — to avoid damage.
Step 3: Gently Rinse the Tooth
Do not scrub it or rinse under running water. Use a bowl of lukewarm water to gently clean it. This helps preserve tissue needed for reimplantation.
Step 4: Try to Reinsert It
If it’s a permanent tooth and you feel safe doing so, gently place it back in the socket. Have your child bite down on a clean piece of gauze or moist paper towel to keep it in place.
Step 5: Store the Tooth Safely
If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in a container of your child’s saliva or milk to keep it moist until we see you.
Once you arrive, we’ll evaluate the injury, take X-rays if needed, and create a treatment plan to help restore your child’s smile — whether that means reimplantation or another solution.
