As National Children’s Dental Health Month comes to a close, we love sharing helpful tips for parents (and parents-to-be) as they watch their little ones grow. A child’s smile is bright and brand new — but also delicate and vulnerable. That’s why it’s important to understand how to care for their teeth and gums through every stage. Let’s break it down with the team here at Bee Happy Pediatric Dentistry in Newton.

Baby Teeth

Your child’s baby teeth — 20 primary teeth in total — usually begin appearing between 6 and 12 months of age. Those heart-melting grins with just one or two teeth? That’s because the front teeth on the top and bottom often come in first.

During this time, teething can cause sore gums and irritability. To soothe them, gently rub your child’s gums with a clean finger or a damp gauze pad. You can also offer a teething ring for safe chewing relief.

Even though baby teeth aren’t permanent, they are incredibly important. They help your child chew food, speak clearly, and guide the adult teeth into place later on.

How to Take Care of Your Child’s Smile as They Grow

As your child gets older, how you care for their oral health changes:

  • Before teeth erupt: Wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth or gauze pad to keep their mouth healthy.
  • Once teeth appear: Begin brushing right away with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of toothpaste — just the size of a grain of rice.
  • As they grow: Continue brushing twice a day (morning and night) and start flossing as soon as two teeth touch. Help them build healthy habits early!
